How Do CBD Cream, Balm and Lotion Work?
If you’re wondering how CBD creams and balms work, perhaps we should begin by talking about just what CBD is and how this cannabinoid interacts with your body.
What Does CBD Stand for in CBD Cream?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of over 100 chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant, called cannabinoids. And yes, we said the cannabis plant. But that doesn’t mean the cannabis used for your cream or balm is made from marijuana. While marijuana is, indeed, a form of cannabis that is high in THC (the cannabinoid that gets you “high”), our CBD products are made from a different form of cannabis, called hemp. Hemp contains only tiny trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%). And all hemp-derived CBD products in the UK undergo a further filtration process to remove even those tiny bits of THC. As a result, you cannot get high using one of our CBD products, including our cream and balm products.
Great, So How Does the CBD in a Cream or Balm Work?
The human body (and the body of every vertebrate, for that matter) makes its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids are part of a cell-signalling system called the endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that attach to receptors throughout the body, called CB1 and CB2 receptors.
CB1 receptors are primarily in the central nervous system and the brain. CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system and other organs and tissues. There are other important receptor proteins in our bodies, as well: TRPV1 and TRPA1. TRPV1 works with the regulation of body temperature and in perceiving the sensations of heat and pain, while TRPA1 senses itching, cold, and environmental irritants.
When your body’s endocannabinoids bind to these receptors, they send out messages to the various systems and organs and help them to maintain homeostasis, or balance. This helps your body to regulate such crucial functions as sleep, mood, memory, motor control, appetite, pain management, stress, and more.
Yes, But What Does That Have to Do With My CBD Cream?
We’re getting to that.
When plant-based cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) are introduced into your body, they mimic the body’s own endocannabinoids and signal to the same receptors, causing nearly identical responses. This is why CBD has become such a popular wellness product over recent years. As it pertains to the creams and balms we’re talking about on this page, studies have shown potential pain management benefits regarding CBD’s interactions with some of these receptors, as well as inflammation.
At this point, we should pause and point out that, in the UK, CBD has not been approved for any medical use. And so, by law, we cannot make any medical claims about CBD for pain, using CBD cream for arthritis, or CBD cream for tendonitis. So, please, do not take anything you read here as medical advice. All we can do is relate what some CBD studies have postulated, and share anecdotally what people are using CBD balms and creams for.
What Do People Use CBD Cream and CBD Balm for?
Depending on the formulation in your CBD cream or balm (the type of CBD, plus the other active ingredients), there are a few different uses for CBD creams and CBD balms.
Aches, Pains, and CBD Creams
Some CBD creams, balms, ointments and lotions are formulated to relieve minor aches and pains that pop up in muscles, joints and other deep tissue. These CBD cream and CBD balm products are rubbed into the skin, and the CBD is absorbed then through the various layers of the skin. This topical CBD relief is often sought after workouts, such as bike rides, aerobics classes, weightlifting sessions, hikes and other strenuous activities. But workout warriors aren’t the only ones who look to CBD balms and creams for pain relief. Sitting at a desk for eight hours or standing in a long line at the market can also invoke aches and pains that scream for a good CBD rubdown.
CBD Balms and Dry, Irritated Skin
People also look to CBD topical products, like creams and balms, for soothing relief of dry and irritated skin. When rubbed into an affected area of skin, the CBD can penetrate and potentially soothe that irritation, making it great for skin that has been dried out by the elements or is otherwise in need of moisturisation.
How to Find the Best CBD Creams and Balms
That’s really the question, isn’t it? If you’ve done your research, you know that people all over the world use CBD products, like CBD creams and CBD balms, for topical relief for aches, pains, and skin irritation. But how can you find the best CBD creams in the UK? You can start by looking for quality.
Find Out Where and How the CBD in Your Cream Was Grown
Getting back to the hemp plant, it’s important to know under what conditions the plant material from your CBD product was grown. Hemp is known as a bioaccumulator, meaning that it basically sucks up everything it can from the soil that surrounds it. This is great for growing hemp in various climates and environments (there’s a reason they call cannabis “weed”), but it’s not so great when that soil contains pesticides, heavy metals, and other harmful chemicals. If those toxins are in your hemp plant’s soil, you can be sure they’ll also be in your CBD cream.
So, it’s important to find CBD culled from hemp that is naturally grown, with no pesticides, GMOs or other such contaminants.
Find Out How Your CBD Was Extracted
Originally, CBD oil was extracted from the hemp plant using steam distillation, which was not terribly efficient and left a lot of valuable cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds on the plant and not in the oil. Then came solvent extraction, which used chemicals like butane to pull the CBD oil from the hemp. But this method left behind chemical residue, which had the potential to be toxic. Unfortunately, many unethical or poorly funded companies continue to use this method to extract CBD because it’s inexpensive. If they would spend a little more money, however, they could use a method that is 100% free of residues and leaves behind a clean CBD oil. This method is called CO2 extraction, and for people who want a pure and clean CBD cream or balm (or any CBD product, for that matter), this should be considered a must-have. CO2-extracted CBD is pure and potent, and this is the only method of CBD extraction we use at CBDfx.
How Can You Know Your CBD Cream Contains Pure, All-Natural CBD?
It would be nice if you could trust every website that sold CBD or the label on every CBD balm you came across. Unfortunately, the CBD industry is full of unscrupulous companies selling poorly made products. So, the only way you can be sure the CBD used in your cream or balm is pure is by having access to lab tests conducted by an independent third-party laboratory. Every legitimate CBD company will give you easy access to third-party lab reports, so that you can see exactly how much CBD (and other cannabinoid) content is in your cream or balm, as well as tests for all of the things that shouldn’t be in your CBD product, such as the aforementioned pesticides and solvents and so forth.
At CBDfx, we make third-party lab reports for our products readily available on our website, so that you can know and trust the CBD product you’re ordering.
What Are the Best CBD Creams?
With access to third-party lab reports, you know that the best CBD creams can be found at CBDfx. Here’s a look at our two best-selling CBD creams.
CBD Cream for Muscle and Joint: Cooling Formula
CBD Cream for Muscle and Joint: Cooling Formula is a water-based cream, which means that it absorbs easily into the pores of the skin, getting down the muscles, joints and other deep tissue — without the greasy mess of some lotions. In addition to all-natural CBD, this cream also contains natural pain relievers white willow bark and caffeine, as well as menthol. White willow bark contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. Caffeine has been shown to block adenosine receptors and peripheral adenosine receptors that influence pain signaling. Menthol works as a counterirritant, meaning its strong icy effects distract you from feeling deeper aches and pains in your muscles and joints. With two available strengths in the UK, 500 and 1000mg, this is a great cream for post-workout rubdowns, or even a nice back rub from your significant other.
CBD Foot Cream
Our CBD Foot Cream gives you the calming relief of CBD (500mg), as well as soothing lavender and tea tree oils. This pleasantly scented cream also contains shea butter to moisturise the rough skin of the feet. A soothing blend of terpenes rounds out the ingredient profile on this delightful CBD cream, which is the perfect relief cream at the end of a long day!
What Are the Best CBD Balms?
Just like our popular CBD creams, our CBD balms only use pure CBD and other natural botanicals. These popular balms come in a variety of formulations.
CBD Muscle and Joint Balm Stick: Cooling Formula

This muscle-soothing balm also contains peppermint and wintergreen oils for cooling pain relief, as well as camphor oil to warm and loosen tight muscles. CBD Calming and Moisturising Balm Stick: Soothing Formula
Our CBD Calming and Moisturising Balm Stick also provides 750mg of all-natural CBD, but with a different array of soothing ingredients. Aimed to help moisturise your skin and ease irritations, this balm contains moisturising shea butter and Roman chamomile oil. I Have Pain. How Much Will CBD Lotions And Balms Help?
Unlike some disreputable companies who have no problem advertising their CBD balms for arthritis or other conditions, CBDfx does not make any claims or guarantees as to CBD's specific ability to treat any symptom or affliction. That said, we've loaded our CBD topicals with plenty of proven skincare ingredients and botanicals that have been around long enough for us to know more about exactly how they work.
What’s The Difference Between CBD Lotion And CBD Balm?
CBD lotion is creamy and light, with natural, plant-based moisturizers that keep your skin soft and supple. With just a squirt or two of CBDfx lotion, you can cover a large area of your skin with CBD and other natural topical agents. You can safely apply it to sensitive parts of your body. With our balms, the CBD is blended with other ingredients that soothe your skin, including shea butter, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, and tea tree oil. Our Balm Sticks have a thicker consistency than CBD lotions, so they take longer to absorb providing longer lasting coverage.
What Are CBD Topical Creams Best Used For?
Your skin is your largest organ and it is resilient, but it also can be sensitive to internal and external disruptions. Our CBD-infused creams and balms can address discomfort thanks to the wide mix of carefully selected ingredients we've chosen, including well-known and loved skincare ingredients that have been pillars of the industry for a long time. Our Muscle & Joint Cream has a non-greasy formula, and it spreads easily and soaks in fast, so you can put it on before you get dressed in the morning. You can get even coverage applying it to large areas, such as your shoulders or legs.
What Are CBD Balms Best For?
Even healthy people who work out regularly can experience discomfort from intense exercise. You can rub a healthy serving of CBD balm and other agents exactly where you feel discomfort and treat yourself to some much-needed self-care. The menthol and other ingredients in our CBDfx balms create a cooling effect, while additional topical ingredients work to address the discomfort. Being so lightweight, they are the perfect CBD topical product to take with you to the gym, office and anywhere else!
How Are These CBD Lotions And Balms Better Than Other Brands?
People who care about the quality of the ingredients in products they use find that CBDfx CBD lotions and balms are exceptional. They’re made with Isolate CBD, extracted from organically grown hemp plants, so they’re free of pesticide residues and other harmful chemicals. They contain no animal gelatin: just safe, natural ingredients like beeswax, organic shea butter, and menthol. Our topicals are never tested on animals and are PETA approved.
What's The Difference Between Your CBD Face Masks?
Each of our CBD face masks have been designed to offer a 10-minute self-care CBD sheet mask experience that will leave you feeling nice and refreshed. Our CBD charcoal face mask helps act as an astringent for oily skin; our Aloe Vera CBD face mask combines that plant's moisturizing properties with CBD; our Lavender Night Time face mask is ideal before bed; while the Cucumber CBD face mask and Rose CBD face mask offer a spa-like experience whenever you feel like you need a quality-of-life boost.
